The toxic thinking that all things are good makes people wonder whether God might not really be cruel. It forces them to see God as a grim joker who inflicts pain and expects his followers to be happy about it. This Pollyanna perspective may produce quick relief, but it blocks reality. A loving God wants the best for us and is grieved when we miss it. True faith in him allows these bad things to be woven together in a protective covering that grows stronger in fiber and softer to the touch.
She believed that dedicating her sons to God would spare them the heartache that other children were forced to endure. She felt that somehow her prayers and faith vaccinated us from evil, that temptations would not likely come our way or, if they did, we would not succumb. Then her father committed suicide. His death hit her much harder than it would have most people, because she thought she and her family were protected.
But when my brother contracted AIDS and eventually died, my mother was confronted in a most painful way with the fact that her faith provided no supernatural vaccination against terrible events. Fortunately, she did recover. She dealt with her confusing ideas about faith. She yelled at God. She admitted she had come to her faith as a way of making life easier. As she shared her anger and frustration with a God who did not do things according to her fondest wishes and expectations, she slowly recovered from the death of my brother.
She also recovered her faith. Today that faith is whole. It has brought my mother into a new understanding of who God is and how he works. Today she is more deeply committed and better equipped than ever to help others who are looking for someone who understands. As I look back on that time, it seems to me that God was building her faith, rooting her more deeply in reality than ever before. To be left alone so suddenly was a burden she never could have carried with a naive faith. But she did carry that burden, even growing under it. She sailed through what would have wrecked a weaker person.
Her ability to accept reality equipped her for a tough turn of events. And through those tough times I watched her grow in wisdom. Your pain is shared by many others who must deal with tragedy and at the same time resolve many issues of toxic belief. Their disappointments in God increase their pain, just as they may have increased yours. Let the Great Teacher use your pain to bring you closer to him. It does not have to be a barrier to God.
It can be a bridge. Jesus, the real Son of God who calls us to live in reality, gives us this counsel: Would you like to tell us about a lower price? I determined years ago that my Faith in Jesus Christ was more important than anything else I had going in my life. Having been raised strictly Irish Catholic really distorted my understanding of God. It's much more simple now. You either believe in something that you can't see, believing in salvation, or you hope to stay out of Hell believing in man-made rituals and rhetoric. Stephen Arterbum has joined a growing chorus of writers and thinkers who know that something must change within the spectrum of Christianity to reclaim the message and mission of Jesus currently mired in a populism and commoditization.
We've sold Jesus down the proverbial creek and dismissed the challenges of his teaching. If we stopped seeing church as a cultural icon with rules and regulations, a club where membership is more important than missional imperatives, we might realize that when folks work together to extend his message with its challenges in these times, we create a spark that could reignite the original message - to create a beloved community that loves the world and seeks to renew it.
Moving from Rules to Relationship' is a kind of blueprint on that journey. Kindle Edition Verified Purchase. I loved studying this book! You've got an empty bowl of beans. You thought the next sexual conquest would do it. You've got an empty bowl of beans," preached Young. What have we traded for an empty bowl of beans? It's not worth it! Don't sacrifice God's purpose and your eternity and the life that God has for you in the Spirit for a bowl of beans. Young's sermon was the first part of a four-week series on wrestling, in which Young will interview famous pro-wrestlers including Sting, Ric Flair, the Undertaker, and "The Million Dollar Man" Ted Dibiase. Each of the four pro-wrestlers will be interviewed, with three of the interviews being live and a fourth being pre-recorded.

Read reviews that mention fear based great book benjamin corey must read god of love read this book jesus church journey ben loving fear-based fundamentalist unafraid taught believed fundamentalism helped lost perspective. Showing of 31 reviews. Top Reviews Most recent Top Reviews. There was a problem filtering reviews right now. Please try again later. I think the character of Jesus is very much under attack by the religious right in this country and I am truly and profoundly grateful for brave voices who speak out on the authentic struggles inherent in truly following Christ, and the voices who encourage following Christ, and not some American Christian Jesus, but the truly hard and beautiful work of loving one another really.
Thanks Ben, another beautiful work. I love this book, as it deals with what is to me a major difficulty with Christianity and its tenets; this being fear, which I believe most Christian churches especially "fundamentalists" instill in their believers, at least for me it has being true.. For me, and for the author the issue of fear has been a big stumbling block in life and I think this fear paralyzes people and prevent us from fully living and loving God.
This book wants you to make a choice of being unafraid of God, and to make a conscious choice to believe that God is Love; period! So I would recommend this book for any Christian or others who ares struggling with fear, and I would recommend every person who reads this book, to believe that Jesus is the "only Word of God", therefore his teachings supersede everything else in the Bible.
Jesus is the final revelation of "God's face" and therefore we have to be followers of Jesus, and no one else, we don't have to fit in with any church's doctrine, we are called to follow Jesus and to love our enemies and to love ourselves and our fellow human beings. Remember that "perfect love casts out fear", so fear and love are enemies, that is the main lesson for me. A MUST read for anyone who has questioned what the church teaches.
This book is very informative about the history of the beliefs of the church and how what is taught today in most evangelical church's is very far from the early beliefs of Christians. I think chapter 4 exposes one of the deepest most dangerous lies that is believed in the Christian faith This one truth has changed everything for me. Thank you Benjamin Corey for sharing your journey and what you have learned along the way.
I pray the Christian faith will look more like Jesus in the years to come. Your book will help countless others as it has me! Kindle Edition Verified Purchase.
