The first example of teen fiction was The Outsiders published in and later made into a feature film which dealt with issues like girls and alienation and was very popular with teens. Actual sex is best avoided in young adult fiction particularly ones aimed at younger people although you can look at things like relationships.

This book features portions written by well known authors about aspects of writing. It's probably a good idea for an aspiring writer to have a blog, as there are many platforms where you can do this for free. Also it's not enough to understand what a character is doing, people need to understand why it's important and what motivates him. Especially if you are writing fantasy you need to write about the world you are writing about, what led up to this etc.

If you are writing about a house describe every room in the house, if you are writing about a family write about every member. If you try to get a book published there should be lots of short paragraphs and white space. Children will often look at a book prior to buying it and a heavy duty read will put them off. An agent or publisher shouldn't charge you to read your book as that is regarded as unethical.

Sometimes they will give you suggestions and offer to re read it once they are implemented which is a good sign and indicates interest in publishing it. I'm writing my first young adult fiction book, and this book answered all my basic questions like how to write for various age groups literacy level, what kids like to read, how many pages, can I refer to drugs or sex, what boys read, and so on. It's written in according to the "dummies" formula. I got the small format Nook version and found it unpleasant because it was not easy to skim parts that I didn't need to read and find parts that were relevant.

I'd recommend getting a hard copy of this o I'm writing my first young adult fiction book, and this book answered all my basic questions like how to write for various age groups literacy level, what kids like to read, how many pages, can I refer to drugs or sex, what boys read, and so on. I'd recommend getting a hard copy of this one, or perhaps an e-book would be okay if it was viewed on a larger device with less clunky navigation tools.

I have read, and learned from, a number of YA writing books as well as other books on fiction writing , but WYAFFD is the one that will be dog-eared from use within months.

There's lots of practical advice on every phase of writing YA fiction from understanding what it is for example, how middle grade fits in and who it targets to each major element of your story hook, characters, plot, pacing, setting, voice, dialogue all the way through marketing, the pros and cons of self-publishing, and a fun section of "Tens," like "Ten Common Pitfalls in Writing YA Fiction.

Throughout the book the content is paired with steps in the process of writing a story which totally works for we the analytical and process-oriented. In particular, I found the sections on revision so useful, I've extracted a lot of the tips onto post-its that I have stuck up on my story wall. Each section helps me think through another layer of storytelling, another way to add richness and complexity. It's the first book on writing that made revision fun for me, almost like a treasure hunt.

This is the book I will be giving to anyone I know who wants to write YA fiction. The author talks about all aspects of writing for teens from concept to published book and everything in between! When I first decided I wanted to write for young adults, I bought almost every book on the market except this one. For some reason, I thought the "Dummies" series was for amateurs because they covered so many other topics How to work an Ipad!

How to use the Stock Market! So I dismissed them. When I finally did get around to picking up this book I was shocked by how much good advice and tips were inside. How much time I could have saved with outlining and plotting and structure, and even chapters on the publishing side of the industry, contracts, things like that. So much stuff I haven't seen in any other guide. The "put on your Editor's hat" chapter was especially enlightening. I bought this book for my Kindle and am loving it. Deborah covers every aspect of writing for young adults in easy-to-understand language. This is a lively how-to book, not boring at all. It's jam-packed with so much valuable info that takes us through every step of the process. It offers so much more than I expected and is one of the best resource books I've ever read for writers, whether you're new or have been writing for years.

What I love about this book is that it covers the specific aspects of writing for teens and also goes over the differences in writing for teens and middle-graders. Take a look at the table of contents. You'll be amazed at how much is packed into this book, how it covers what to consider before starting your novel, each step in the writing process. It's got everything I need, and I love having it in my Kindle so it's easy to take with me wherever I go so I can refer to it at any time.

In spite of the title, this is one of the best books on writing I have ever read. Good practical advice likely interspersed with stuff you already know. The section on flashbacks alone was worth it. I was able to out what I needed to adjust my own novel and it's a great reference tool for any type of genre writer. I highly recommend this guide!
