I consider this the "Raiders of the Lost Ark" of Dracula movies. It may not be the most faithful adaptation of Dracula, but it is certainly action packed. This was the first time Dracula was presented in a romantic manner, and Frank Langella plays him with an intensity that makes him sexy, smart, and dangerous. Exactly what a vampire should be. R 97 min Drama, Horror. A love triangle develops between a beautiful yet dangerous vampire, her cellist companion, and a gerontologist.
This film is oozing with style and the story is largely revealed through flashes of imagery more than dialogue. Again, one of my favorites, and a largely under appreciated film. It has the best opening sequence of any vampire film I have ever seen. For that reason alone, it is worth watching. Jonathan Harker begets the ire of Count Dracula after he accepts a job at the vampire's castle under false pretenses. This being one of the original and best of the Hammer Horror films, many people hold it very dear in their hearts, and, for the time it was made, it actually is a pretty good adaptation of Dracula.
It is more sinister and horrific than Bela Lugosi's Dracula in its more graphic depictions of blood and violence most eery being that of the lady in white , but the problem with the movie is the stage productions are so obvious, the sets so obviously sets, and the blood so obviously fake, that it makes the whole thing laughable, not only that but the first few scenes are overly dramatic and poorly written. What once might have been frightening, just seems mostly campy today, and to me, that makes it less than great. Highly overrated film, but still worth a watch for vampire film fans.
R min Action, Crime, Horror. Two criminals and their hostages unknowingly seek temporary refuge in a truck stop populated by vampires, with chaotic results. This movie - like most of Quentin Tarantino's films - is good, violent fun. His dialogue has to quickly keep pace with the horror violence of this vampire flick, but overall it is fun, funny, and highly entertaining, if completely absurd.
There are some moments of rambling by some of the characters which seems a bit much, but George Clooney is great at subtly reminding us how ridiculous the movie is even while being cool. Not Rated 74 min Drama, Horror, Romance. A lonely and bitter young heiress - jealous of her cousin's engagement to another woman - becomes dangerously obsessed with legends surrounding a vampire ancestor, who supposedly murdered the young brides of the man she loved.
This is a beautiful film and really original for the time in which it was made. The dream sequence is very odd and disturbing and the ambiguity of whether Carmilla is crazy was quite good as well. More of a classically gothic story than anything else, it was very beautiful, if a bit talkative at moments.
PG 96 min Action, Comedy, Fantasy. The planned reburial of a village elder goes awry as the corpse resurrects into a hopping, bloodthirsty vampire, threatening mankind. Therefore, a Taoist Priest and his two disciples attempt to stop the terror. An unexpected comedy with lots of physical humor, this turned out to be a very good movie that actually made me laugh out loud occasionally. The action sequences are very entertaining and the overall plot while being pretty crazy, was still really original.
After an Alaskan town is plunged into darkness for a month, it is attacked by a bloodthirsty gang of vampires. For shear adrenalin rush terror, this movie is the one to beat in this genre. The actors all contribute subtly to the story through downplayed performances, and we get hints to a back story that is quite dynamic through this, but that all takes a back seat to the intense survival of the smartest storyline that unfolds.
The movie revolves around one simple idea: What if your town was attacked by not one, but a group of vampires who are fast, fierce, smart, and powerful and virtually their only vulnerability daylight was eliminated? What would that look like? It would look like this movie. Not Rated min Comedy, Drama, Fantasy. When the villagers killed Constantin Tirescu, they thought it was justice. Vlad Cozma thinks it was murder. Now Constantin thinks pickles might go nice with blood. This film is one of the most original comedies of the genre I have ever seen. It was unusual and full of double meaning and random startling moments.
It was confusing and fantastic and the unique vision of the director really makes the story shine. It focuses on the Strigoi, a particular folk myth in eastern Europe about witchcraft and vampirism. The movie is a mystery, a puzzle and an intriguing look into the region post-communism. A very perplexing and fascinating film. Years after a plague kills most of humanity and transforms the rest into monsters, the sole survivor in New York City struggles valiantly to find a cure.
Will Smith does a great job in this third big screen adaptation of "I Am Legend". And while I prefer Vincent Price's performance and the smaller scope of "The Last Man on Earth", this is a good adaptation of this story, too. The only thing I didn't particularly care for was the look and mannerisms of the "Vambies" That is my word for vampire zombies - deal with it. Otherwise, a good film overall.
R min Action, Fantasy, Horror. A man who serves in the war between the forces of Light and Dark comes into possession of a device that can restore life to Moscow, which was nearly destroyed by an apocalyptic event. The perfect compliment to Night Watch, this film keeps the style and tone of the first film and brings the whole story to a good ending. I felt the final battle of the film seemed to drag on a bit long, but overall it was a great movie.
The two movies really complete each other. Here it is best to watch them back to back as one story. Not Rated 73 min Horror, Musical. A ballet rendition of Bram Stoker's "Dracula", stylized as an Expressionistic silent film. This is a very well done film and it is interesting since it is done largely in ballet in black and white with specific splashes of color for emphasis. I enjoyed it, but again, I feel perhaps it has been a bit overrated. R min Comedy, Horror. After a new neighbor moved into the house next door, Charley discovers that he is an ancient vampire and goes in search for the help of Peter Vincent, a famous "vampire killer" to save his neighborhood from the creature.
Remakes are a hard thing to judge fairly, particularly when an original film is so greatly beloved as the original Fright Night is by many people, myself included. The greatest judge of the success of a remake is if the filmmakers are able to pay a bit of homage to the original and the spirit of it, and yet make the film something uniquely their own.
This retelling of Fright Night does this wonderfully. It loses some points in my book for the pure fact that it is a remake and not an original story, but for its fantastic performances, particularly from David Tennant and Colin Farrell Farrell makes this character his own here, completely and its alternately scary and humorous tone, this film is a great success. A remake worth watching, even for fans of the original. Residents of a coastal town learn, with deathly consequences, the secret shared by the two mysterious women who have sought shelter at a local resort. Directed by Neil Jordan, it is very much in keeping with his style of films.

In fact, the film is so full of story that it makes it hard to just appreciate the characters themselves a little or the dilemma of the vampirism, but overall, the cast gives a terrific performance and the film is terrific. One of the best of the recent crop of vampire films. R 94 min Horror. A mysterious device designed to provide its owner with eternal life resurfaces after four hundred years, leaving a trail of destruction in its path. Guillermo del Toro Stars: Cronos is one of the few successful sci-fi vampire stories, I've seen. Guillermo Del Toro and Ron Perlman teamed up together for the first time on this film, long before reteaming for "Blade II" and made a pretty decent vampire film together.
What's great about this film is the characters, settings, and back story are well developed, interesting, and unusual, which makes it enjoyable to watch. The problem I had with the movie is that it spends too much time focusing on how the main character is physically changing into a vampire and too much time showing other characters attempting to kill him for the device. Overall, though, it was still a very good movie.
What Is a Vampire?
R min Action, Horror, Sci-Fi. Blade forms an uneasy alliance with the vampire council in order to combat the Reapers, who are feeding on vampires. As many critics have already said, this movie is much better than the original Blade. In Guilllermo del Toro's skilled hands, Blade is not only a fantastic comic book action movie, but has a very good storyline, smart characters, good acting, and really good dialogue, which was what was lacking in the original film.
A really good action vampire film. Not Rated min Drama, Horror, Thriller. Two American newlyweds in Paris experience a love so strong, it almost devours them.

First off, I will caution that this film has a few harsh scenes of realistic graphic sex and violence. I was not really expecting much from this bilingual film, but I was very pleasantly surprised. It took me off guard at how it combined the intense need for blood in a very sexual way for these characters. For me, this film exemplified the human dichotomy between love and desire really well. It does not have a very elaborate plot and the pacing might be a little slow for some people, but the gritty realism of the film and the superb acting were just note perfect for me.
Absolutely one of the best of the genre. A fantasy-thriller set in present-day Moscow where the respective forces that control daytime and nighttime do battle. Night Watch has such a great premise and is so well filmed and directed that it needed to be included on this list, even though it is not exclusively about vampires and doesn't deal with vampirism in any typical sense. This is more a story about all supernatural beings and their struggle to be good or evil.
This is a really great action movie though, and it is worth watching. It's unusual and a great addition to this genre. R 98 min Crime, Mystery, Romance. Copy from this list Export Report this list. In the early 18th century, this rural Serbian broke his neck after a fall from a hay wagon. The best way to deal with vampires, of course, is to prevent them from coming back in the first place.
A few centuries ago in Europe this was often accomplished by staking suspected vampires in their graves; the idea was to physically pin the vampire to the earth, and the chest was chosen because it's the trunk of the body. This tradition was later reflected in popular fiction depicting wooden stakes as dispatching vampires. There was no particular significance to using wood; according to folklore, vampires — like djinn genies and many other magical creatures — fear iron, so an iron bar would be even more effective than a wooden stake. Other traditional methods of killing vampires include decapitation and stuffing the severed head's mouth with garlic or a brick.
In fact, suspected vampire graves have been found with just such signs. According to a Live Science article, "The body of the woman was found in a mass grave on the Venetian island of Nuovo Lazzaretto. Whether that burial reflected an accused vampire or not, other graves are much clearer. If your local villagers neglected to unearth and stake a suspected vampire and he or she has returned from the grave, there are steps you can take to protect yourself.
The exact method varies around the world, but in some traditions the best way to stop a vampire is to carry a small bag of salt with you. If you are being chased, you need only to spill the salt on the ground behind you, at which point the vampire is obligated to stop and count each and every grain before continuing the pursuit. If you don't have salt handy, some say that any small granules will do, including birdseed or sand. Salt was often placed above and around doorways for the same reason. Some traditions hold that vampires cannot enter a home unless formally invited in.

This may have been an early form of the modern "stranger danger" warnings to children, a scary reminder against inviting unknown people into the house. There are, of course, a few truly vampiric animals, including leeches, lampreys and vampire bats. And in all these cases the vampire's intent is to draw enough blood for sustenance, but not enough to kill the host. But what about human vampires? There are certainly many self-identified vampires who participate in gothic-inspired subcultures.
Some host vampire-themed book clubs or secret bloodletting rituals; others wear capes or get vampire-fang dental implants. It's all frightening and fun, but blood drinking is another matter entirely. The problem is that blood is toxic; because it is so rich in iron — and because the human body has difficulty excreting excess iron — anyone who consumes blood regularly runs a real risk of haemochromatosis iron overdose , which can cause a wide variety of diseases and problems, including liver and nervous system damage.
