This book was a page-turner for me and I was sorry when it ended. Jordan is now one of my favorite fictional detectives! A little flawed, but honest; he does what it takes to solve a case.
Put on your body armor and go along for the ride with D. You will not be disappointed! The mystery was exciting to unravel. Toner has a way with telling a story that by the end you are always surprised by who is really involved and how all the characters are interconnected.

Eleven-year-old Emily rode her bicycle from home from school, got as far as the long driveway into the estate, and vanished. Her bike and glasses are found, but no clues as to what happened. Ben Jordan of the Dublin Police is assigned to head up the investigation. Jordan is trying to retire early to save his failing marriage but doesn't have a choice in his assignment. It is well written. It has an interesting plot and the characters are compelling. I also love the sitting, Ireland! Read it in ywo days. One person found this helpful. I was drawn into the story from the first page.
Ben Jordan is Detective Inspector with two wives. One is the normal ring-on-her-finger variety, the other comes in the form of his job, and his dedication to the latter shatters his relationship to the former. His first case thereafter is a tough, emotionally draining child-kidnap case: He finds he has to deal with the lowest of the low: He is aided by two police officers, dedicated and committed to the task in hand.
Toner is a skilled story teller. I thought he was particularly adept in conveying the personal lives of the police officers with efficiency: His characterisation was equally adept: This was a book and author I was glad to have come across. Jordan has handed in his notice but is called in to find a missing child, the daughter of a big shot Irish businesswoman and a former American football star. Jordan know that he has maybe 24 hours to find the missing child and Toner breathlessly drags us along with him on his frantic search that includes encounters with the IRA, a sex traffic ring, corruption and much more.

Houdini's Handcuffs (Ben Jordan #1) by J.J. Toner
Corruption is endemic in high places. Irish society thrives on the twin pillars of institutionalized greed and organized crime. Church steeples are outnumbered by the tower cranes of avaricious developers and the cities resonate to the sounds of police sirens. The two men face off in a deadly game that only one can win.

Lafferty must have corrupted some member of the investigative team. Jordan's effort to discover the guilty party and finally see Lafferty pay for his crimes keeps the reader enthralled as it leads Jordan down some very dark paths. Marital difficulties, a wayward daughter, and finding himself accused of the crimes he's investigating are only some of the obstacles Jordan faces as he pursues his quarry, ignoring physical dangers and threats against his life. The tension heightens as the peril builds, and the reader will find the book impossible to put down as the electrifying climax approaches.
