Instantly the light died and there was the sound of running footsteps up the gravel drive. Doyle searched the area with his flashlight but could find no one. He went back to where he had first seen the beam of light.

No windows were broken in the church. There was no indication that anyone had tried to break in. Then Doyle saw the woman. She was lying just off the path. A green scarf was tightly knotted around her throat, which had been viciously slashed. She was young and had been pretty once. Ten minutes later, the churchyard was filled with policemen. Searchlights were set up and the medical examiner began inspecting the body.

But, except for a bakery carton of cupcakes, nothing was turned up. There were no signs of a struggle. The medical examiner made his report: Strangled with the scarf. Those cuts are funny. Not one big one but a whole series of little ones, as if the killer had used a small knife. And not a very sharp one at that.

By this time, a crowd had gathered outside the churchyard although it was almost 2 a.

They did, but it brought no results. Back at headquarters, I went through a pile of Missing Persons reports. There was nothing matching a description of our murder victim. It seemed to me that if the woman had been carrying a box of cupcakes, she might have a family. No, it looked like our killer had planned on murdering the girl, then tried to cover up by making it look like a mugging. If that was so, whatever the killer was looking for in the darkness must have belonged to him—and must be important to us. Now a clearer, more logical picture began shaping up.

The Cupcake Killer, 1942, Queens, New York

This is the perfect holiday cozy. Great characters in Phyllis and her cronies, including Sam, Carolyn and Eve. Wonderful writing and entertaining storyline and intriguing mystery.

Definitely a fun read. As I said I have not read any of the others in this series, but I was pulled in so much that I am going to start from the beginning. The way Phyllis investigates and follows clues is intelligent and I really enjoyed going along with her and her friends on this mystery. The recipes are great at the back of the book. I may just have to try them for the coming Christmas season. The mature characters really appealed to me even though I am not a senior, yet.

Even if you have not read any of the other books in this series, you will be able to thoroughly enjoy this one. The setting is perfect, the characters are fun and intelligent, and the mystery is a great whodunit. I loved meeting this new cast of people and cannot wait to visit Weatherford, TX again very soon. A perfect book for a Christmas gift to a cozy lover.

This is a wonderful read and a series that I am going to enjoy delving into very soon. I kind of knew who the killer was early on.

  • Just the Sexiest Man Alive (Berkley Sensation)!
  • A Home for the M.D. (Mills & Boon Cherish).
  • Peace in International Relations: A New Agenda (Routledge Studies in Peace and Conflict Resolution).

  • Dom Casmurro (Portuguese Edition).

But it was mostly one of those back of your mind ideas. I loved that Phyllis' other roommates were more prominent in this book than they were in the last one.

Carolyn had a little more book time, and we actually got to know more about Eve. Sam helped out with the investigating again, and Buck appeared a time or two as well.

I liked how Phyllis dug into all the suspects pasts to find out reasons why they might have killed. I didn't care for Felicity the reporter at all. But her personality fit the type of character she was perfectly. This was again a story that sucked me in from the first pages. I wanted to see how Phyllis would put all the clues together, and figure out just who had done it and why.

I also loved the twist at the end about what Eve has been working on all this time. If you're looking for a fun cozy mystery for the holidays, you need to try this book! Dec 17, T K Nelson rated it it was amazing Shelves: Another well crafted story from the Fresh Baked series.

When a tabloid TV reporter and her crew are introduced into the plot it seems destined to be an obnoxious addition but I was pleasantly surprised with what the author does with it. I really liked that after giving us multiple suspects the author gives one last realistic twist to finish up.

Thi Another well crafted story from the Fresh Baked series. This book may disappoint fans of the established group of regulars. It is almost entirely Phyllis and Sam and readers familiar with previous books will likely feel something's missing. Carolyn and Eve appear only when Phyllis is at home. Mike Phyllis' son appears briefly when he stops by to visit but doesn't bring his wife and son. Ms Washburn writes an excellent cozy and the final couple of pages drop a tidbit that should make for interesting subject matter in future books.

Phyllis and Sam are off to the Christmas parade with a batch of her candy cane cupcakes when one of Sam's friends is killed by sniper.

When the man's son in law is arrested for the murder, they're convinced he's innocent. Of course Phyllis and Sam have to investigate. The whole notion of of the pesky reporter ending up actually helping seemed completely unlikely. The solution didn't ring true, either. It was okay, but just okay. I didn't think it was as good as some of the earlier books in the se Phyllis and Sam are off to the Christmas parade with a batch of her candy cane cupcakes when one of Sam's friends is killed by sniper.

I didn't think it was as good as some of the earlier books in the series because a lot of what happened seemed too far fetched. Jan 26, April Schilling rated it it was amazing. I've enjoyed every book in this series so far, and this book was no exception. Phyllis, Sam, Carolyn and Eve are a delight to read about and have been very enjoyable characters.
