What worries me is that I can't manage to get my thoughts in order. I asked her for a more detailed explanation.
Neither could I very well grasp what she meant by "centre". Has the heart a shape? Then show me its centre. If this is the case, you can just as well say 'circle' or 'square'. But while shapes or colors vary unceasingly there is a thing that remains immutable. Do you not find that disturbing? According to your logic the variable should be the immutable". After which I reverted to the question of leaving.

Excuse me for saying so, but at your age, with your education and after the studies you have completed, it strikes me as impossible that everything should fall so easily into place. Short book of small anecdotes and Soseki's relating to significant past events in his life; from his troubled adolescence, study years to his life once he had established himself as Japan's first writer whose employment was to write as a full time job in terms of literature I guess.

Jan 26, Jan added it Shelves: As a work of literary miscellany, it is a loose and eclectic collection of personal vignettes written by Natsume Soseki throughout a period not long before his passing. This volume, the essays of which were serialized in a newspaper, would be an equivalent to personal blog entries today. His philosophical insights on life are born of his own thoughtful personal reflections.

In one chapter, perhaps my favorite, he starts to acknowledge the state of his health and wonders how he continues to survive one illness after another, while in contrast, he learns of the deaths of people he used to know, some of them healthier and even younger than him. Soseki engages the mystery of human life in a satisfyingly concise yet profound existential rumination. Those short articles in the book were written during the author's final year, and it shows. Sometime Natsume Soseki's writing reminds me of Haruki Murakami but Soseki's tone is always more serious than Murakami's , perhaps that's why I like both of their writing?
Nov 29, Tsering rated it really liked it. The best part I loved about this book is that you can read any chapter without missing the build of the rest of stories. As my second Natsume Soseki book, I have acquired some keen understanding to the kind of person he was. Here on, I would like to read more of his books. I Am A Cat.
