My favorit book on preaching. Mar 29, Daniel Souza rated it really liked it Shelves: The kind of book that I and every pastor should read regularly, every couple of years at the very least. Sep 28, Peter N. An excellent book for pastors written by one of the clearest evangelical authors of the last 50 years. Stott is a careful exegete whose writings are filled with love for Christ and His church. In this book he walks through five different Biblical words that describe a preacher: Steward, herald, witness, father and servant.
The section on the preacher as father was the most convicting for me. I would highly recommend this book to all ministers and those training for ministry.

Few books I read are 1 or 2 stars because I am careful about what I read. Would not read it again, reference it, or recommend it. But it is not necessarily dangerous except as a time waster.
The preacher's portrait : some New Testament word studies.
This does not mean I agree with everything in it. I would recommend this book to others and would probably read it again or reference it. There is a quite a variety here. Classic in the genre or top of the line for the subject. I might also put a book in here that impacted me personally at the time I read it. I would highly recommend this book, even if I do not agree with all that it says.

Few books fall in this category. Over time I have put less in this category. Jan 21, Aaron Downs rated it really liked it. This book helps men to recognize their strengths and weakness, giving them the ability to lean into their strengths and compensate for their weaknesses. This book was helpful because it clearly identifies the role of the preacher, and it identifies those roles through the lens of Scripture.
Not only does it identify the roles, it show what those roles look like in the life of the preacher. I did not expect anything less from one of the most faithful expositors of God's Word. The late John Stott did an amazing service to the church of Christ. As a preacher of the gospel for 32 years and a pastor for 8 this is a book that I feel every preacher should read over and over no matter how long you have been in the ministry.
It will help you stay on track thank God for Dr.
Excellent easy yet straight-shooting read, along the lines of the great pastor-teachers i. Spurgeon, gives good outline for faith and conduct for any Christian. Solid information critical to my walk, will definately reread it several times. I suggest trying to forget who the author is.

If that doesn't work, remind yourself that God uses earthen vessels, some of which are down right muddy. It may also be helpful to know that this is the Stott of , not of today. I liked this book because I learned so much from this book--about specific passages of Scripture. It is certainly not another rehash on preaching.
