"ER" One Can Only Hope (TV Episode ) - Full Cast & Crew - IMDb

At first, I just thought most only children were spoiled in China due to the entire younger generation being only children and due to the fact that parents naturally pay more attention when they only have one children. Never would I have thought that they may face more pressure to succeed because they are the only child in the family. If anything, I would think the only child policy created an even crueler world of survival of the fittest.

Great read for anyone who wants to learn more! I ordered " Only Hope" for research purposes.

It was helpful for my project. But, it was also engaging and fun to read. I think anyone interested in the lives of teens in China would enjoy the book. We read this book for a course on contemporary issues in China. It succinctly covers a wide variety of issues associated with China's only hope policy.

I bought this book for my Asian study course. I havn't finished it yet, but I think it's great and sure I will learn something from it. This book was required for my anthropology class. Even though the prof was forcing us to read it for class it was able to hold my interest hence my title can't complain. One person found this helpful.

This book is based on the author's ethnographic fieldwork as part of her doctoral research in Northeastern China the Yellow Sea port city of Dalian, to be precise over a period of several years in the late s. She came to know many students and their families intimately, and conducted extensive interviews and surveys with hundreds of other students. To my knowledge, this is the first longitudinal study of Chinese adolescents and one of the all too few dealing with this important population. Fong examines the impact of the one-child policy from a sociological and educational perspective in rich detail and provides the likely less informed reader with thick descriptions of the sort that are now necessary to differentiate the experiences of today's Chinese youth.

Though like-minded in some important respects, as the author makes clear in her thesis, these youth defy monolithic depiction. However, it must be noted that this book, as valuable as a contribution as it certainly is, examines only a segment of China's vast adolescent population, most of whom reside in rural areas unlike those of this study.

Strongly recommended for the general reader with interest in contemporary China and required reading for those engaging in serious inquiry into the contemporary Chinese educational system and its familial connections. See all 6 reviews.
