Now I'm anxiously waiting for your next one! Aug 21, Judy rated it it was amazing. She had enough of being on the run with her outlaw of a husband. Now her ex is in prison and she's content cooking for the hands at the Ranch. And her young daughter Tessie can be at her side. Rusty Calhoun had stayed away from Dry Creek. He left at eighteen to join the army and never returned, until now. His father had kept him away, but now that he was dead, Rusty is responsible for his younger brother Eric.
Unfortunately his brother is in deep trouble and the beautiful Renee already has 'guilty' stamped on Rusty's head as well. Her young daughter, on the other hand, is sure he's a prince who can rescue her. Once again the reader is drawn into the small town of Dry Creek and it's friendly people. Hargrove is always there with a welcoming smile and loving hug for the prodigals who are returning.
This time around there are dangerous cattle rustlers stealing the peace and good will around the Christmas season along with the cattle. Jan 26, Rosemary rated it liked it. Renee, our leading lady is a divorced single mother working as a cook for the ranch hands in Dry Creek.
Her ex-husband is currently in prison for robbery. She has trust issues with men in general because of previous abuse. Rusty, our leading man is a prodigal son recently home from Afghanistan where it is obvious he has been severely and recently injured. He has a younger brother that he is now the sole provider for, but, has not seen him in 8 years. His now deceased father was abusive, and Renee, our leading lady is a divorced single mother working as a cook for the ranch hands in Dry Creek. His now deceased father was abusive, and his mother left the family for parts unknown when he was still a child.
Tessie The real star of the story is the 5 year old daughter of Renee. She is an isolated and shy little girl simply waiting for her prince to come. When Rusty is found by Renee and Tessie on the front porch after being shot, Tessie believes he has been shot for a good reason, and Tessie has finally found her prince.
Renee wants him to disappear NOW and Tessie wants to keep him. The mystery of who, how and why Rusty was shot is revealed through the course of the story. I felt that the author did not elaborate enough on the relationship with Rusty and his brother Eric. This could have been a strong foundation for Rusty's newly acquired faith. Instead, the author focuses on Rusty's mother and his seemingly lackluster forgiveness of her. I found little in the way of leaning on faith with this book, and felt it may have been better suiting for another classification with Harlequin instead of the Love Inspired category.
For me, there was no actual chemistry between Renee and Rusty. I felt that where Tessie led, Renee followed. That is all the negative things that I can say about this book. What I loved about this book was Tessie. Tessie carried the story with her cardboard angel wings throughout the whole of the book. This child's imagination has made her believe she really is a Princess or an Angel, perhaps both.
And, she will stop at nothing to keep her Prince. She knows her prince will protect her and she knows she wants a puppy. If only it all could be that simple. For a good chunk of the book, Tessie is the only one who gives Rusty any credit for being the good guy. Tessie visits her father in prison gifting a gingerbread cookie she has made especially for him. When she tell her father that his princess is here, her father tells her that he has no princess.

Another point I enjoyed about the book was the perfect strand of pearls. Rusty had taken a job as a young boy to gift his mother with the necklace, only his mother leaves them behind when she deserts the family for good. Rusty has carried them throughout his life as a reminder, but perhaps also because he lacks knowing exactly what to do with them. In the end, both Rusty and the pearls find a home.
White Christmas in Dry Creek was overall, a nice, light, enjoyable read. Would I add it to my personal collection? Aug 17, Susan rated it liked it Shelves: Renee is frightened when a wounded stranger collapses on her front porch, but her daughter thinks he's a fairytale prince.
Renee's ex-husband is in prison for armed robbery and Renee has learned to be very cautious around men. She's not too sure she can trust Rusty around her daughter. Rusty has returned to Dry Creek after leaving the army. He is looking for his younger brother who he suspects is involved in something illegal, which is how he got shot. While Rusty tries to get Eric to come clean Renee is frightened when a wounded stranger collapses on her front porch, but her daughter thinks he's a fairytale prince.
While Rusty tries to get Eric to come clean he is also falling for Renee. But can they overcome their trust issues and have a future together? I liked Rusty a lot. He had stayed away from Dry Creek while he was in the army because his father had threatened to hurt Eric if he didn't. He stayed in touch as best he could without endangering his brother, and came home after his father's death to take care of Eric.
He stumbled on some cattle rustlers at the same time he saw Eric. Landing on Renee's porch saved his life and gave him some hope for the future.
Even though he could see her wariness he couldn't get her off his mind. The ranch owner offered him the chance to stay in the bunkhouse until he recovered. Rusty and his brother had been raised by their abusive father after their mother left them. Rusty was totally lost when it came to knowing how to relate to a woman but he really wanted to get to know Renee better. I loved his gentleness with Renee's daughter Tessie and how she could get him to do almost anything.
Because of what Eric was involved in, Rusty was afraid that everyone in town would suspect him of being a criminal and that it would reflect badly on Renee. I loved his determination to do the right thing.

I really liked seeing his soft heart. One of my favorite scenes was at the beginning when he got talked into being the king in the Christmas pageant. I had a harder time liking Renee.

She was working very hard to make a better life for Tessie after escaping her abusive marriage. She was very wary around men because of it. When Rusty fell into her life she judged him very quickly without knowing anything about him. She thought he was a criminal just because he had been shot, not even considering that he was a victim. I understood her wanting to protect Tessie but I found her waffling back and forth about him to be very frustrating. His tenderness with Tessie moved her but she still kept thinking the worst about him.
She slowly began to build up some trust, but even then she didn't give it fully until after the resolution with the rustlers. I would have liked to see her have more faith in him. Tronstad has created a delightful story in which both Renee and Rusty have a hard time trusting Renee Gray works hard to protect her daughter, Tessie from a failed marriage and an outlaw of a father. Tronstad has created a delightful story in which both Renee and Rusty have a hard time trusting love again. The perceived guilt of Rusty and his brother Eric, due to a mysterious thieving of cattle, plants even more reservations in Renee's mind about a possible future with this man.
But as the story moves forward, Rusty's integrity shines and Renee continues to lose reasons for pushing him away. This was a beautiful romance planted in a setting of warmth and hopeful anticipation. I highly recommend this sweet story for anybody looking to get lost in an ideal frame of mind.
