More than in most thrillers, however, Gore gives those characters context, heart and substance. The minor characters are not there as mere slalom poles for the plot to wind around , but they contribute to the tale by showing that the "heroes'" actions affect more people than the primary actors and that collateral damage may go deep in to families, friends and institutions. Gore's knowledge about politics and the human compromises that enable politicians to smile like a Crest toothpaste ad, while their imaginary souls churn like Don Coryell on the sideline elevates Powerblind above the usual detective thriller.

Gore thrills us, entertains us, and makes us think. I hope his description of what really matters in American politics is offbase, but then I didn't think Barry Bonds used steroids. If Gore is right, our political heroes, like our sporting heroes, may have feet of clay; but they still are real people in fascinating situations, and watching them, as described by Gore, is a great escape from what may be a congruent reality.

Steven Gore has written a thoroughly researched and dramatically rendered thriller. His characters are complex and believable. The plot is realistic, as is the often humanely difficult road that leads to its resolution. Power Blind is a first rate thriller, which should catapult Steven Gore into the upper echelon of American mystery writers.

Little is scarier to me than having Supreme Court Justices that represent a narrow view--liberal or conservative--sitting on the bench America's highest court. In Steven Gore's new book, he looks at extreme political maneuvering by two brothers, one a candidate for the US Presidency and the other a judge. A small window of time exists when they can shovel in two narrowly conservative justices who will change the fundamental character of the Supreme Court.

The story centers around detective Graham Gage, who is investigating the death of a "clean up" investigator who is responsible for cleaning up political messes and hurting political opponents of those who hire him. He also has silenced, through threats and bribes, the victims of every kind of judicial and corporate crime--he works for the powerful.

The list of suspects is long and he doesn't even know whether the perpetrators are good guys or bad guys. The number of characters, their role and the weaving and unweaving of the relations, crimes, strategies and counter-strategies is often complex, but not quite so much that the plot cannot be followed. I read the book over a long period of time, and I never quite lost the thread, but I believe that I could have enjoyed it far more in fewer readings.

So if you like political intrigue and a thought-provoking tale, you'll enjoy this book. Charlie Palmer, a cunning lawyer who worked to sweep major white-collar crime under the rug, calls Graham Gage, a private investigator. Palmer had been paralyzed from an earlier attack and is near death when he contacts Gage. He never has the chance to tell Gage what he needed to say.

But what was Palmer trying to tell Gage? Oh, but there's quite a tangled web here! Landon Meyer is a senator in Washington, D. He has the ear of the President, and is pushing two candidates known through most of the novel by the pseudonyms Starsky and Hutch as Supreme Court justices. His brother Brandon is a federal judge in California and pulling his weight a lot with Landon. This, and much more, keeps readers turning the pages and wondering if truth might be stranger than fiction - whatever one's political preferences might be.

Though the thought-provoking plot twists abound, I still give this novel about a 3. The characters could be less "stock" than they were written. But then again, to some readers the stock characters are half the fun of a novel such as this!
